Summer is here, and for many families in northern Virginia, that means spending more times outdoors. Whether it’s sitting by a campfire, cheering at a baseball game, or enjoying a picnic, mosquitoes and other pests never seem to fail to irritate us. That’s why we’re here to share some tips on how to keep pests away so you can enjoy the summer weather.
Tips To Keep Pests Away
1. Bug Spray
As always, you should use bug spray that contains all the necessary ingredients as well as apply it properly. Ensure that you also apply the product regularly, paying special attention to dusk and dawn when mosquito activity is most active.
2. Check Yourself Regularly
When spending time outdoors, many pests can get on your clothing or latch onto your skin for a ride. The most common being ticks that can infect innocent outdoor adventurers with Lyme Disease and many other tick-borne infections. That’s why it is important to always check yourself and children for pests and/or bite marks that you should keep an eye on. The quicker that you remove the pest from yourself, the less likely you are to get infected. Learn how to properly remove a tick to ensure that the head doesn’t get embedded in the skin.
3. Protect Food and Drinks
When it comes to protecting your food, consider using lightweight net domes for a plate that may be sitting out for a while. There are also tents and shelters that have net siding that can help protect food and yourselves while enjoying a meal. When using the tents, it is important to understand that some pests may still get inside, however, it could decrease the number. Keep drinks covered by using a bottle or cup with a lid. If drinking from a can, consider putting a straw through a napkin or other form of barrier like aluminum foil.
