National Pest Management Month has been observed for more than 30 years to honor the pest control industry. Pest control companies protect property from pest damage, and people from pest-borne illness.
Importance of Pest Management
The National Pest Management Association was created in 1933. It is currently a non-profit organization with over 7,000 members. Together, the members of this organization support the pest control industry’s commitment to protecting health, property, and food.
The NPMA uses the month of April to recognize the importance of the pest control industry, and their role in reducing risks from household pests. During this time, they encourage homeowners to be proactive in preventing infestations of pests such as termites, mosquitoes, and rodents. Not only can these pests be a nuisance, but they also bring about health threats.
How You Can Prevent an Infestation
It is difficult to eliminate pests from the interior or exterior of your home, which is why it is better to be proactive in your quest to prevent pest infestations. Here are some tips for homeowners from the National Pest Management Association:
- Seal all openings, even cracks, along your home’s foundation
- Eliminate sources of standing water
- Cut plants and tree branches away from the side of your home
- Clean the kitchen and dining room, and empty garbage frequently
- Keep food containers tightly sealed, and keep pet food in sealed containers
- Keep garbage containers sealed
- Put screens on all windows and doors
- Call a licensed pest control company, like GreenStar Pest Control, if you see signs of a pest infestation
Signs of a Pest Infestation
Keep an eye out for signs of a pest infestation. If you see any of the following, contact GreenStar Pest Control to eliminate and prevent future infestations.
Rodent or cockroach droppings: Rodent droppings hide under appliances, in cupboards, and any other hidden areas you can think of. It’s best to leave the cleanup to a pest control company, as these droppings can transmit disease.
Gnawed Items: Rodents and squirrels will leave visible chew marks on boxes, walls, or wires. If you see gnawed items in your home, call for assistance immediately. Chewed wires could start a fire.
Nests: Rodents, squirrels, and even larger pests will create comfortable nests from organic matter, paper, and insulation. Look in cabinets, wall voids, roof rafters, and drawers for signs of nests. If you find one, call us to dispose of the nesting materials and eliminate the infestation.
Sawdust or holes in wood: If you see a pile of sawdust around your cabinets or walls, it’s generally a sign of carpenter ants. While they aren’t actually eating the wood, they will gnaw their way through it to create tunnels. Similarly, termites eat wood and leave behind holes.
